Velma Babić
I am Velma Babić, a multimedia artist originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, now based in Munich, Germany. My work is influenced by both my personal as well as the collective experiences during the Yugoslav Wars, and through it, I explore themes of identity, trauma and migration.
A significant aspect of my art lies in its performative nature, where I not only capture images but also use my body as a medium.
By positioning my body within the frame, I aim to reclaim agency, transforming from a passive subject to an active participant in my own narrative. My work often has a surreal quality, drawing on the tension between memory, trauma, and suppression. This allows me to explore the complex emotions tied to gender, displacement, and identity, and invites viewers to reflect on these themes from their own perspectives.
I regularly exhibit or present my work and contribute to teaching visual arts in post-conflict settings.
